Making Your Own Personalized Wooden Signs

By Daniel Butler

Doing arts and crafts are simple and easy to create by your own. Just bring your imaginative side, as well as your creative thinking, and you are good to go. Your DIY projects can be everyday items that are used in the house with or without function. Personalized wooden signs are some of the projects you are able to do.

These signs may for any purpose that you thought of. It may be possible that you will give these as presents for your friends, or even that special someone. The reason may also be a project idea as gift for your family. No matter the occasion and season, this is one DIY that will serve as a gift to anyone.

It does not have to be expensive. Secondhand or unused items may become your source of materials. As long as they are still salvageable and usable, you may add these as decorations over your signs.

Your project would not proceed if you do not have wood. It does not matter if what you found is big or small. Just saw it off to your preferred dimensions. If it is rough, use sandpaper to smoothen the sides. If there are chipped pieces on its sides, you can chop them off or let them stay as part of border design.

Also, ready your writing materials, as well as items found in the house. It is great to use permanent markers, however brushes ads certain aesthetics to the work. Paired with acrylic paints, these would bring out the brush strokes as you use it. It is better to use acrylic because it dries faster.

Speaking of writing, you also need to think of what you want to put on your sign. It may be your family name or a family motto. Favorite quotes and phrases may do as well. If you are sending it as a gift for a special occasion like a wedding, you may write down the name of the newlyweds and your message for them. The possibilities are endless.

Afterwards, brush on a finishing coat on its surface. This is to protect the writings and the sign from potential wear and tear. Commonly used coating is decoupage glue or water based sealers such as mod podge. If you want, you can DIY it by mixing water with PVA or polyvinyl acetate glue.

When the glue dries, you can now hang it up on the wall. You need nails and hammer to put it in place. Make sure that the wall is clean and thoroughly wiped out of dusts before doing it. If you do not like to put a hole on your wood, you could opt to use vinyl decal. These are wall stickers you put at the edge of the back surface of your wood. This is a practical way to protect your wood and your wall.

Now that it is already in place, take a few steps back and then appreciate what you did. Find a place across from that and sit down. Relax your muscles from the hard work. You earn that as well as the self fulfillment it brings you.
