Some Reasons For The Popularity Of Yoga In Freeport Illinois

By John Evans

The Indian philosopher Swami Vivekanada toured around Canada and the United States to promote and introduce his unique practical philosophy. He called it Asana. From the very beginning this philosophy appealed to large numbers of people and today there are many millions of people in every country in the world practicing it, albeit calling it yoga rather than Asana. Asana is practices across cultures and by people from all walks of life. Indeed, yoga in Freeport Illinois is as popular as it is everywhere else.

Even with millions of people practicing Asana, there are still some common misconceptions about this philosophy. Many people think that it is nothing but a fitness program that consists of stretching and striking various poses. There are also those that still think that it is a mystical eastern religious sect. None of this is true. Asana is a philosophy that aims to improve the body, spirit and mind holistically.

It is certainly true that Asana does involve a whole lot of stretching exercises and poses. This does not means that the philosophy is all about exercise. These stretches and poses are instruments that are used to help practitioners to concentrate, to improve their inner disciple and to focus. It obviously helps a lot to improve overall flexibility and fitness too. It is important to note that there are different disciplines of Asana.

Asana never involves any form of competition and this is a huge plus for many practitioners. There is never any program whereby certain exercises or poses must be mastered within a set time frame. Everyone progress at his own pace. Classes are not formed by putting together people that are roughly on the same level. They consist of individuals ranging from rank beginners to veterans. This makes it ideal for families.

There has been a number of informal as well as empirical studies that focused on the health benefit of this philosophy. The findings are universally positive and there are indeed numerous benefits to be had. People with asthma, heart conditions and hypertension, to name just a few, benefit hugely. Depression and anxiety sufferers also benefit. Asana improves overall flexibility and the strengths of the tendons and muscles.

It is certainly possible to start with Asana at home and without help. Yet, because there are different versions of this philosophy, it may be better to join a class for at least a few times. It would then be possible to experiment with the different version until one finds the one version that suits. Classes are affordable and it is not necessary to buy any equipment or special clothing.

There is a huge amount of material dealing with yoga and it is difficult to decide which to buy or use. The important thing is to first settle on a particular version of the philosophy before buying guides, subscribing to websites or join classes. It may be best to try out a few versions before finally settling on one. There are many online discussion forums where one can get advice and help.

There is no doubt that Asana has many benefits. It helps people to become fit, to increase their attention span, to manage their health better and to improve their overall flexibility and strength. There are no drawbacks or risks and no financial investment is necessary.
