Useful Information About Gopher Trap

By Stephanie Ward

Moles are some of the animals that live exclusively underground inside tunnels that they dig. They have sharp claws and teeth that they use to dig tunnels in the ground. It is very hard to see a mole, but its effect can be seen from above the ground. They can cause major damage to landscape, trees, scenery, and grass. Thus, the best way is to eliminate them as soon as they are noticed. This is what one should know regarding gopher trap.

There are various methods one can use to eradicate moles. On the other hand, many of these ways are very unsuccessful since moles hardly surface above the ground. Using a trap is the only effective method. When they get trapped, they are euthanized or moved to another place where they cannot destroy the environment.

In the market, most traps are manufactured to be fatal in order to kill these animals instantly. It is a very difficult task to catch moles unharmed. For this reason most of the traps are designed to kill them. A person usually sets up the traps by installing them underground in the burrows, with an indicator being the only part left above.

There are two major kinds of traps. Both are lethal. Barrel trap is the first model. It is applied through insertion of a metal full- or half-cylinder into the tunnel of the mole. A catching loop that snaps fast is triggered when the mole makes movement around it. This catching loop fastens around the body of the animals and kill it on the spot. This happens once the mole is snapped.

The scissor trap is inserted in the tunnel the same way. It is usually designed with a trigger ring that hangs at its center. Once the animal moves around the area, it moves the ring with its nose causing the equipment to snap and grasp it. The part that snaps is designed like toothed jaws. This type of trap is used only once.

One of the secrets to being successful at catching moles is to be able to locate active tunnels. In most cases, active tunnels can be identified by the presence of fresh soil mounds deposited at the entrance of the tunnel. Since moles make several tunnels, they sometimes end up using only one or a few of them. That means that many of the tunnels can remain inactive for a very long time.

Even after locating an active tunnel and setting up the trap, it may take up to several days for one to catch the animal. Being patient at this stage is very important. One must ensure that they cause as little disturbance to the tunnel as possible. This is because in case the animal realizes that its tunnel can been tampered with, it may never return to it in a very long time.

In conclusion, most of gophers are handled while dead. To prevent any physical contact with the mole, it is advisable for one to wear protective gear in the hands. This is because moles are notorious for carrying parasites that can transmit serious health conditions.
