Understanding Mud Logging Services Permian Basin

By Susan Hayes

Surface logging also known as mud logging is the collection of information on the drilling processes. The information so collected is analyzed, assessed and also examined to prove its accuracy. The information and data obtained during the mud logging services Permian basin is used to unearth the unknown drilling mysteries.

The objectives of this activity vary depending on the specialist and the expected end result. However, most of them aim at identifying the most productive hydrocarbons, identification of geological formations to be relayed to the driller. The driller is thus able to use the data so provided to achieve an economically viable operation.

Before the introduction of technology, the specialist would drill the area and collect the samples of gas and oil in the mud. They would then wash the mud to check the quantity of the oil in the mud. If the gas level or the mud level was high, they would carefully check for a crack in the rock. Once spotted, they would drill through the crack to get to the oil. The process has since been simplified by technology.

With the advancement of technology, most of the drilling sites have been automated. The geologists and engineers do not have to wash the mud to check for any traces of oil. If the internet connection is good, the person at the field can relay the information to the specialists. They then evaluate the cost involved against the revenue involved. They thus make a very informed decision on the part that is supposed to be drilled.

For the success of this activity, the persons involved must be very careful. They must know that any delay in relaying information might mean making a wrong decision. The person at the field needs to be very careful. He is supposed to check for any soil or rock contamination. These contaminations include the existence of chemical additives and ions on the rocks. If not well analyzed they might give wrong positive results.

The person collecting samples on the ground should be very careful not to contaminate any of them. Some of these materials have to be taken for further tests in the laboratories. The results are used by the geologists and engineers to evaluate whether the project is economically viable or not. Their main area of concern is the benefits expected in terms of revenue and the costs to incur. If the benefits are higher, the project is viable.

To rise through the mud logging career requires sacrifice. Only those who are patient and results driven succeed in this career. Continuous learning is a must in this career. You must yearn for change and work towards its realization. The way to succeed is to constantly upgrade your skills to remain at par with the new technological advancements.

Good planning is key for success realization. The mud loggers should gather as much data as possible before kick starting the venture. They must familiarize themselves with the locality, geographical features and even the economic activities of the place. They should be careful not to miss any geological information or fact in their analysis.
