Tips On How To Operate A Roll On Trailer Jack

By Mark Robinson

At times, your car will break down away from areas where you are likely to get assistance. For example, driving alone in a secluded place where there are no drivers or mechanics to help you change a deflated tire in a truck. To avoid inconveniences, you should have basic knowledge on how to change the tires very quickly using basic tools like the roll on trailer jack. There are several steps that you can use to change a tire.

The first step is to move the lorry to an area where the vehicle cannot fall. Preferably, park in a flat area. After parking the car, the driver should turn off the engine but leave the indicator lights and headlights on, to caution other travelers from bumping on it. You should also use a road sign to inform other drivers that there is maintenance going on.

Put the car on parking gear. Leaving the car on drive mode is dangerous since the car might move upon slight distraction. You should not leave the engine igniting, since the gear could engage itself, making the truck to move. If there are traffic officers on the ground, you can engage them to let other road users that there is some maintenance taking place.

Use the jack to lift the vehicle. You can use the user manual to ascertain if it matches that weight. Offload any extra cargo from the lorry before lifting the vehicle. If you are not sure of the amount it can lift, you can use the manual. Some are meant for small vehicles.

Use wedges or other objects to block the wheels from moving as you operate on this tire. Once you have confirmed that the wheels are intact, place a wooden or plastic object on this jack. This is to ensure that it does not come into contact with the surface of a lorry since it might damage the part of this truck.

Loosen the nuts until they are a few steps away from coming out of the wheel. Turn the jack to lift the tires that you want to operate on. Turn it until it is above the ground. While turning it, do not let any part of your body to lie under the truck, since a slight mistake might get the truck hit you

Remove the nuts from the wheel and take the wheel out. If you observe any noise from the point where it contacts with the body of a vehicle, scrutinize whether it is as a result of it coming out of its place. It is dangerous to change a tire with it out of place since the vehicle might lose balance and fall on you. If there is luggage on the lorry, it is advisable to remove it before changing the tire.

After you have changed the tire, turn the jack in the opposite direction to lower the lorry to ground. Remove the blocks that you had used to prevent the wheels from moving out of the way. Drive for a short distance to check if the vehicle is in the right condition. If you observe some bouncing movements on the tire, check for pressure and inflate the other tires until they attain a similar weight.
