A Guide To Choosing Precision Dispensing Tips

By Melissa Cole

The dispensing tip, also known as a dispense needle is a critical part of precision fluid dispensing systems. Therefore, when choosing such a tip, you should consider several factors. You do not want to choose just the tip that works, but rather one that is suited best for your application. Precision dispensing tips have varying gauges, lengths, threads and angles among other features meant to optimize dispensing repeatability and accuracy for each application and fluid type.

There is a wide selection of dispense needles on the market, including PTFE-lined, brush, angled blunt end, blunt and tapered dispense needles. These needles are made of a wide range of materials, including Teflon, stainless steel and polypropylene. As you dispense fluids, it is essential to choose the right dispense needles for the syringe. The type of needle you need depends on the kind of fluid you are dispensing.

You should make sure that the length, gauge and shape of a dispense needle meet the precise needs of your application. This way, the needle will deposit the fluid accurately and the entire dispense system will work in an optimal manner. Different types of dispense needles are available because many fluids have different properties to meet unique application requirements. Using the wrong dispense needle will increase your cycle rates, rejects and reworks, causing poor quality of parts and an inefficient production process.

The general purpose tip is the most common dispense tip available. It is versatile meaning that you can use it to dispense many different types of assembly fluid. Nonetheless, the ability of the general purpose dispense tip to dispense many different types of fluids, it may not be the suitable tip for your application. You should select the tips that can dispense the correct amount of fluid as quickly as possible.

When dispensing low or thin viscosity fluids, it is advisable to use a general purpose tip with a small diameter. The choke point of such a dispense tip will limit the movement of thin fluids to ensure better control of the dispensing process. Nevertheless, if you want to dispense solvents, it would be recommendable to choose a dispense needle that is PTFE coated. The outer coating will prevent the fluid from wicking up on the cannula. This will ensure that the deposits are accurate and enhance repeatability.

When you want to dispense thicker viscosity fluids, tapered tips are ideal. The tapered dispose needles enhance flow and this will enable you to dispense a large number of accurate and consistent fluid deposits within a short time frame. When using tapered dispense needles, you can reduce the pressure on a pneumatic fluid dispenser.

Even though the dispose tips of one company may appear identical to those of another company, they are not the same. Therefore, ensure that the company you choose to buy dispense tips from adheres to a strict quality inspection process. The best dispense needles do not have molding flash or burrs that can contaminate your material or change the consistency of your fluid deposits.

Another essential factor to consider is the dispensing components, including the dispense tip, piston, adapter assembly and syringe barrel are designed to work together properly. The components should deliver consistent and accurate fluid deposits with minimal waste of fluid. This will help you save money over the years.
